The Brazilian Sebestião Salgado is one of the world’s foremost documentary photographers. For over 30 years, his black and white images have humaized the struggle of the developing world amidst a continually globalized society. The photograph above was taken at the Serra Pelada gold mine in the northern state of Pará during the gold rush of the 1980’s. The image embodies two of his most prominent themes: Workers and Migrants.
