Pastel


Pastel is a typical Brazilian dish, consisting of crisp pastry with assorted fillings. In Brazil the Pastel is a salgado (salty snack) primarily sold on the street in markets (feiras) made out of a thin pastry envelope containing minced meat, catupiry and chicken, shrimp, cheese and herbs or another filling and then deep fried. Sweet pastéis also exist and may contain guava jelly and cheese or other fillings.

Facts about the Portuguese language

Portuguese is the official language in nine different countries: Portugal, Brazil, Mozambique, Angola, Guinea-Bissau, Timor-Leste, Equatorial Guinea, Cape Verde, and São Tomé and Principe.  Portuguese is growing fast and has the potential to be an “international communication language,” according to UNESCO. The roots of the Portuguese language are based in the autonomous community of  Galicia , in the north of Portugal and the northwest of Spain. Their language, Galician, was a mix of local dialects and common Latin, and around the 14th century, Portuguese emerged as a descendant language.

CAIPIRINHA

The national cocktail of Brazil is the refreshingly tangy (and potent) caipirinha, made of cachaça , lime, sugar and good ol’ fashion elbow grease. Despite the fact that the name of the drink is derived from the diminutive of the word caipira , which can be translated as “hillbilly”, caipirinhas are enjoyed from the fine restaurants of São Paulo to the beach side snack bars of Recife. In fact, they are now enjoyed across the globe. The key ingredient is cachaça , also known as pinga , caninha , or aguardente . It is a rum-like alcohol distilled directly from sugar cane juice. To make a caipirinha , grab a low-ball glass and the following: 2 oz. of cachaça 2 tsp. of sugar 1 lime (quartered) 1 handful of crushed ice To make, toss the lime wedges and sugar into the low-ball glass and muddle (mash together, mixing the sugar with lime juice… if you don’t have a muddler, you can use a spoon).
