MayMoMA Design Store Destination: Brazil Product Collection
In mid-May 2009, the MoMA Design Stores will launch Destination: Brazil, a MoMA exclusive product collection highlighting more than 75 lifestyle products usually found only in Brazil. The collection evokes the colors, forms, and materials found in Brazil, and includes home accessories, jewelry, and more designed by both established and emerging Brazilian designers. The Destination: Brazil product collection includes a number of handmade objects that utilize many of the natural resources indigenous to Brazil. The items range from a dramatic centipede-inspired fruit bowl made from recycled coconut fibers, sugar cane, and wood to the elegant, geometric pottery of designer Kimi Nii to the striking iridescent jewelry made from recycled plastic bottles created by Mana Bernardes. Products by the renowned Brazilian designers the Campana Brothers (including a MoMA-exclusive felt bowl featuring a sushi-inspired design), fashion designer Jussara Lee, and Pritzker Architecture Prize winning architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha will all also be included in the collection. In addition, the Campana Brothers are designing the logo for the Destination: Brazil collection. “Today, Brazil is a thriving center of design filled with tremendous diversity and a spirit like no other in the world,” said Kathy Thornton-Bias, General Manager of MoMA Retail. “Through our travels, we found many artisans and designers creating products that reflect the country’s rich multicultural history while still remaining both highly beautiful and functional. It has been a distinct pleasure for us to experience the vibrant creative energy of Brazil first hand and to translate that into a stunning product collection for our stores.” Destination: Brazil was made possible through the participation of the Consulate General of Brazil, Instituto Tomie Ohtake in Sao Paolo, MALBA - --Fundación Costantini, Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires, and TAM Linhas Aéreas S.A.
