FESTA JUNINA

June 19

To celebrate Saint Anthony, Saint Peter and Saint John we will have square dance and “quentão”. The Festa Junina, festival that celebrates Saints Anthony, Peter and John was brought to Brazil by the Portuguese and it is full of typical music, food and dance. Saint John is most celebrated in the Northeast of Brazil, which is an arid land and people use the opportunity to give thanks to the Saint for the return of the rain season. The rural life is celebrated, and the guys, dressed up as farm boys with braces and straw hats, and girls with pigtails, freckles and checkered dresses. Quadrilha is a theatrical dance brought from France that tells the story of a wedding in a small town. Because it coincides with the corn harvest a lot of the food served are made from it, such as canjica, corn cake, pamonha and sweet tapioca just to name a few. To make the party warmer on this beginning of winter in Brazil the drinks are quentão, a mix of cooked ginger, cinnamon and cachaça (sugar liquor) and hot wine. If you are curious about this colorful, tasteful and musical festival, join BEA on June 19 at The New York Film Academy from 7pm to 11pm and become a fan of this traditional celebration.
