PORTUGUÊS – FACTS ABOUT THE PORTUGUESE LANGUAGE

Portuguese is the official language of Portugal, Angola, Brazil, São Tomé and Príncipe and the Republic of Mozambique.  It also shares official language status in East Timor and Macau.  In total, it is estimated that there are approximately 200 million native Portuguese speakers to be found across Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas.
Portuguese belongs to the Western-Iberian group of the Romance language family.  Its closest relations are Galician and Fala.  Out of the more major languages, Spanish is considered to be the most similar.
Two main groups of dialects exist: Brazilian and European.  For historical reasons, Asian and African Portuguese have always resembled closer European Portuguese, although some parallels can be drawn between them and Brazilian Portuguese.
Portuguese is written using the Latin alphabet and makes use of the acute, circumflex, grave accents as well as the tilde and cedilla.
